Here is my advice & experience on being a high profile nanny. I hope this helps you or someone you know 🙂
- Be open to relocating (I moved from Chicago to California)
- Research & Apply to agencies (The Herbert Alfred Agency is my fav but there are many more I’ll link at the end)
- DO THE PAPER WORK agencies require. Time consuming? Yes. Worth it? Also, Yes.
- Have an education (Most require Bachelor Degrees)
- Have experience and references (most agencies like to see you were with a family for 2 years minimum)
- Have a clean social media or have everything private
- Dress appropriately for interviews (hair tied back, no ripped pants, nothing provocative)
- Be honest & trustworthy (be the person you would want to have working for you)
- DO NOT ask employers personal questions about who they are, what they do, how they became so successful, etc. If they share anything with you, that’s a different story, but don’t annoy them with questions. You are there to care for their children, not interview them.
- DO NOT fangirl/fanboy any of their VIP friends you may come across or meet. This is not cool. Do not act phased. Do not take photos (even if you think you’re being secretive). Be polite, be kind and do your job-care for the children!
- NEVER share photos of the the kids, family, property, etc, on social media. You’ll most likely sign a NDA saying you won’t do this, but seriously, DON’T. You can get fired.
How I got into high profile nannying…
Anyone remember the Ben Affleck-Jennifer Gardner scandal back in 2015? Ben was having an affair with their nanny and the entire world was reading about it.
I remember reading a magazine with all the juice on Jen & Ben on the way to the mall with my then boss and her son (nanny life). It was a Thursday, August 13, 2015, aka my birthday. We were going shopping and to lunch to celebrate.
Reading the Ben & nanny scandal gave me feelings of disgust. I didn’t understand how someone could do that to a family. I thought to myself, “I would never do that to a family, EW, the dads I work for are like a father type to me.”
Because, Google, I started researching how much money these “celebrity or high profile nannies” made and fell into a rabbit hole. I was shocked that they were making double and sometimes even triple of what I was making. Best of all, they travel with these families all over the world. I had been babysitting since I was 12 and nannying since I was 19. I had the experience, I loved kids, and I had morals. I knew I had to become one.
It took me roughly about 2 months to land my high profile nanny dream job in California. How did that happen? I signed up for every agency I could find that specialized in “celebrity or high profile nanny” jobs. I completed the surreal amount of paper work that these agencies required, both efficiently & quickly, getting it back to the agencies within days (if you want it, get after it- show the agencies you mean business!)
I interviewed via phone calls, FaceTime, and was flown out to interview in person. I even tried to make myself look unattractive in some interviews, because I didn’t want to be a threat to anyone.
The dream job I ended up landing, was for an awesome couple, that were truly #couplegoals. Not only did they have a super sweet love story but they only had eyes for each other. The mom, let’s call her Nichole, taught me so much. Nichole had confidence, was a genuine person, and best of all, was a really good mom. I believe she really made me a better nanny and person.
A big perk to this job was that it was a rotating schedule with another nanny. So, I worked 7 days on, 7 days off (the other nanny worked when I was off). It was really nice to be able to have an entire week to relax, visit family, vacation, whatever my heart desired!
Things to know* I doubled my salary moving to California (from my nanny job in a Chicago suburb), and I was given a 5k raise every 6 months. If you are good at what you do and are valued, it will pay off.
Agencies I’ve used:
- The Herbert Alfred Agency
- Pavillion Agency
- The Nanny League
- Westside Nannies
- Elizabeth Rose Agency
- Chicago Nannies
*These are the ones I have used, but I have not gotten a job with all of them*
